Administrative / biographical background:

The Fisheries Experiment Station was set up by the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries in Conway, Carnarvonshire, in 1919. Its mission was to study, (along with the Burnham Fisheries Laboratory in Essex), shellfish of commercial importance in England and Wales, and it has particular expertise in the hatchery cultivation of oysters and other bivalve shellfish, prawns and lobsters and the development of mussel fisheries.

The station was under the control of the principal government fisheries laboratory in Lowestoft, and with it formed part of the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (an executive agency of the Ministry) in 1997.
