This series relates to files relating to the work of the Estimates Clerk.

Some records particularly the Blue Notes were registered in up to four separate filing systems namely 2HF-EST (T 233), 2NR-EST (T 298), 2PIO-EST (T 320) and 2-EST and the various parts may be registered with the same former file number but sometimes with a part in each series rather than in just one series. After the 1975 Treasury re-organisation The Estimates Clerk (2EST) files were renamed EST.

Administrative / biographical background:

Prior to 1967 the Public Income/Outlay Division was responsible for the Treasury Officer of Accounts and Estimates Clerk. In 1967 the General Expenditure Division came into existence responsible for looking after public expenditure and public receipts in relation to each other and the national economy. It was within this division that the Estimate Clerk worked. In particular their parliamentary work fitted naturally into the work of the General Expenditure Division, but used a separate file registration system.
