Administrative / biographical background:

The Trade Policy Department was formed in October 1968 at the establishment of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, assuming responsibilities formerly exercised by the Economic Relations Department of the Foreign Office and the Commonwealth Trade Department of the Commonwealth Office. The department also represented the FCO on various Whitehall economic committees and bodies. In 1973 it merged with the Export Promotion Department to form the Trade Relations and Export Department, which continued to use the MT registered file series.
