Title: | SUPERINTENDENTS OF HOME YARDS |
Description: |
On the abolition of the Navy Board the dockyards were placed under the direct authority of the Admiralty, acting through the executive control of a Superintendent, who was an officer (usually of Rear-Admiral's or Captain's rank) on full pay. These letters are from the Superintendents of home yards, plus the Storekeeper in charge of the depot at Haulbowline (near Cork). One box of Portsmouth correspondence has been accidentally transposed with one from Pembroke and Haulbowline, disturbing the numerical sequence. When using the ADM 12 indexes to search for papers in ADM 1, documents in this sub-sub-series often have the following references: 'Devon. Yd.', 'Cha. Yd.', 'Dept. Yd.', 'Deal Yd.', 'Haul. Yd.', 'Wool. Yd.', 'Ports. Yd.', 'Ply. Yd.', 'Sheer. Yd.', 'Pem. Yd.'. |
