Title: | LETTERS FROM ADMIRALS ETC. - CHANNEL FLEET |
Description: |
These reports come from the flag officers commanding the principal squadron operating in the Channel and Western Approaches, which was at various periods known as the Soundings Squadron, the Western Squadron, the Grand Fleet, or the Channel Fleet. It also includes reports from the senior officers of other squadrons in those waters, both those detached from the main fleet and those operating under independent orders from the Admiralty. These were often very numerous: in 1794, for example, thirteen different admirals rendered reports which are now in ADM 1/100. Some attempt has been made to keep each officer's letters together, so that the volumes overlap chronologically. When using the ADM 12 indexes to search for papers in ADM 1, documents in this sub-sub-series have the reference: 'I' |
