Administrative / biographical background:

In 1803 the Barbados Volunteer Emigrants were raised in Guiana, as a Dutch corps in English pay, composed of captured Dutch soldiers and later French deserters from Spain.

In 1804 the Barbados Volunteer Emigrants were disbanded and re-raised as the York Light Infantry Volunteers; commanded by Major General Sir Charles Green for service in the West Indies amongst English and Germans as a rifle corps, and placed on the British Establishment from 25 March 1804. This corps was disbanded at Harwich on 19 March 1817.
