Custodial history: UNA series files were transferred to the Department for International Development upon its creation in May 1997.
Selection and destruction information: OD 61/1-9 were selected for permanent preservation following an accelerated review process under the Open Government Initiative in the Overseas Development Administration which identified certain subjects whose records could be released early, including these files on United Kingdom membership of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). Other files in the series will be subjected to selection review when they are due regular second review from c. 2003.
Administrative / biographical background:

The United Nations Department A was established after the predecessor United Nations Department was split in two in 1974. It continued dealing with general questions relating to the United Nations development system and the Commonwealth Development programme until 1984, when it was merged with United Nations Department B to form the United Nations and Commonwealth Department.
