Custodial history: The records were originally created and stored by the Welsh Office. The National Assembly for Wales (Executive) took over custody from 1998 and the records stored in Neptune Point Cardiff. The Welsh Assembly Government took over custody in 2007 and the records were stored with a third party contractor. In 2011 the Welsh Government took over custody of the records.
Accumulation dates: 1974 to 1980
Selection and destruction information: Records Collection Policy, s.3.1.1 records which detail changes in the strategic functions and obligations of the UK and English and Welsh governments.

Administrative / biographical background:

The records were created by the Roads Division of the Highways Group in 1976. In 1977 this Division split into two separate divisions; the Roads Administration Division (dealing with planning and budgets) and the Roads Engineering Division (dealing with the day-to-day maintenance and technical work carried out on the roads programme in Wales). The Highways Group was also renamed as the Transport and Highways Group in 1977.
