Title: Admiralty: Royal Navy Seamen's Services Continuous Record (CR) Cards
Description:

The records in this series are Royal Naval Continuous Record cards (two cards for each record) which act as a continuation of service of those servicemen maintained within ledgers up to 1929 and for those who enlisted prior to 1923.

The records detail:

  • Forename;
  • Surname;
  • Place of birth;
  • Occupation;
  • Service number;
  • Date and Period of Engagements;
  • Physical Attributes (eg. age, height, chest measurement, hair and eye colour, wounds or marks);
  • Details of Ships Served In;
  • Ratings;
  • Periods of Service;
  • Character and Ability;
  • Details of Badges;
  • Classes for Conduct.

Date: 1925-1939
Arrangement:

The cards as maintained by the Royal Navy were arranged by function (e.g. engineer, stoker, etc.) rather than date, and then by service number order. Each function is identified by a prefix identifier:

  • F - Fleet Air Arm.
  • J - Seaman and Communications Branch.
  • K - Stokers.
  • L - Officers' Cooks and Stewards.
  • M - Miscellaneous.
  • SS - Short Service, Seamen and Stokers.
  • SSX - Short Service Seamen.
  • Pensioners - no prefix.

These cards superseded the ledgers used from 1925 to 1929, which are contained within ADM 362.

The records were originally held in 512 volumes.
