Description:

Folio 19. Draft letter from Lord Courtenay, Secretary to the Poor Law Board, to J Lowndes [Joseph Lowndes], Clerk to the Guardians of the Wolstanton and Burslem Poor Law Union, replying to the letter addressed to C W Savage, [architect] regarding the proposed improvements to the ventilation of the workhouse.

Enclosed is a printed description of the plan of ventilation for workhouses devised by John Walsham and a suggestion that in addition to the tubes referred to, Dr Arnott's ventilating chimney valve should be applied in those wards which are occupied by day and night [not included]. The latter ventilator can be obtained at nearly all furnishing ironmongers.

A request is also made that the plans of the proposed additions and alterations at the workhouse be sent for the inspection of the Board before the invitation of tenders is advertised.
