Description:

A representative selection of registers, indexes, and files relating to claims made by civilians to the Central and District Military Compensation Boards in respect of losses suffered by reason of the South African War, or for property requisitioned by the military forces.

Formerly WO 39, with the addition of representative files of individual claims and registers (WO 148/16, 18-35, 41-44, and 46-48) which were later found in the Colonial Office.

Custodial history: Passed from the War Office to the Colonial Office before transfer to the Public Record Office in 1933.
Selection and destruction information: Records extensively weeded before transfer to the Public Record Office. Originally transferred as WO 39, the series was reviewed in March 1961 under s. 6 of the Public Records Act 1958. This authorised the further destruction of valueless material in the series. The few remaining records were transferred to this series.
