The National Laborartory Service (NLS) is the scientific nerve centre of the UK’s environmental regulator the Environment Agency. Its laboratories provide analytical solutions to problems of air, water and soil pollution, applying the very latest chemical and molecular techniques.

The NLS was originally part of the National Rivers Authority and became a single entity in 1993. Today the NLS operates as a business unit of the Environment Agency and is based at three laboratories located in Exeter, Nottingham and Leeds, with each one specialising in specific areas of environmental testing and analysis.
