Description:

Folios 59-60. Letter from Richard Thomas Tasker of Bromsgrove, to the Poor Law Commission, wishing to draw attention to the late nomination of the medical officer for district 1 of the Bromsgrove Poor Law Union.

Advertisements appeared in the provincials papers this month announcing that elections of medical officers for the union would take place on the 13 March and that candidates must send in their applications with testimonials by the 11. As the present medical officer of district 1 only holds the one licence, from the Society of Apothecaries, Tasker offered himself as a candidate. He is a member of the Royal College and a Licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries and has been engaged in his profession for nine years. He submitted testimonials from gentlemen who have known him a long time as to his professional and general character. Enclosed are the testimonials in the same state as they were returned to him after the election. He draws the Commissions attention to the fact that 'you can see that only one half had been opened or read.'

He would like to appeal as he believes that the board did not act in accordance with the Commissions desires as Mr Fletcher, the present medical officer was re-elected with the one qualification.

Annotated: 'Mr Fletcher is most favoured by the Bromsgrove board and I think deservedly. When his reappointment is returned to the Commissioners I will sanction it.' A Power, [Alfred Power, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner].

Further annotated: write accordingly and return testimonials.
