In 1945 a working party, under the chairmanship of Sir Herbert Brittain, was set up by direction of the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir John Anderson) to consider the future of the imperial silver coinage. Its recommendations gave rise to the Coinage Act 1946 which provided for the substitution of cupro-nickel coin for silver.
