Administrative / biographical background:

The Energy and Nationalised Industries Policy Division was created when the Department of Energy was established in 1974. It succeeded the Fuel and Nationalised Industries Division in the Department of Trade and Industry. The Division was responsible for general energy questions and policy and the coordination of the Government's relationship with the nationalised energy industries. Responsibility for this work was incorporated into Branch 3 of the Corporate Planning and Finance Division in 1975 and the Division's remit extended to examining the financial objectives of the industries as well as plans, guidelines, appraisal and monitoring of the energy sector generally. These responsibilities continued when the functions passed to the Finance and Nationalised Industry Division in 1977.
