Description:

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: L'Actif (master Joseph Ricard).

History: a French merchant ship (450 tons, 38 men, 10 passengers), bound from Port au Prince, Saint Domingue to Nantes, laden with sugar, coffee, cotton, indigo, ivory and brandy; taken on 6 October 1778 in latitude 47°N, longitude 12°W from Paris by HMS Berwick (Hon Keith Stewart commanding), in sight of Admiral Keppel's squadron, and brought into Portsmouth.

Court papers: 1-15; Ship's papers: 16-37. [These are interim paper numbers, and are likely to change once more fully catalogued].
