Description:

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Abigail (master Miller).

History: an American merchant ship (sloop, 40 tons, [abandoned by her crew ?]), bound from Cap François, Saint Domingue to Rhode Island, laden with salt, molasses and sugar; taken on 1 October 1782 off the Chesapeake by HMS Fortunée (Hugh Cloberry Christian commanding) and HMS Champion (Thomas Wells commanding), and brought into New York.

  • [CP 1]: libel, Christian v The Sloop Abigail, 7 October 1782;
  • [CP 2]: affidavit as to papers by midshipman Abraham Conybeer, prize master, 7 October 1782.

Ships Papers numbered SP 1:-

SP 1: logbook, 3 March-1 October 1782, includng a harbour journal kept by William Childs at Cap François, Saint Domingue, possibly from another vessel commanded by a Captain Brown.
