British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Abigail (master John Smith).

History: an American merchant ship (sloop, 35 tons, 2 men), bound from White Hill to Cohansey, New Jersey, unladen; taken on 13 July 1781 in Delaware Bay by the privateer Trimmer (Levin Turner commanding), and brought into New York.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 4:-

  • [CP 1]: libel, Turner v The Sloop Abigail, 18 July 1781;
  • [CP 2: affidavit of papers of Thomas Okerson, prize master, 18 April [sic] 1781;
  • [CP 3]: monition, 18 July 1781;
  • [CP 4]: deposition of John Smith, a Quaker, 20 July 1781.

[Decision: condemned, if no response to monition by 8 August 1781].
