In 1993 the School Examinations and Assessment Council and the National Curriculum Council (both established by the 1988 Education Reform Act) were amalgamated to form the School Curriculum and Assessment Authority. It was funded by the Department for Education and had responsibility for the promotion and support of curriculum development, in addition to advising the Secretary of State on the School curriculum and on examinations and other assessment matters. It was replaced by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority in 1997.
