Administrative / biographical background:

The School Curriculum Development Committee (SCDC) was established in December 1983 following the demise of the Schools Council for Curriculum and Examinations. The Committee was jointly funded by the Department of Education and Science and the Local Authorities. Its members were appointed by the Secretaries of State for Education and for Wales, half of them being nominated by the local authority Associations and the Welsh Joint Education Committee. The membership was drawn mainly from local education authorities and serving head teachers.

SCDC's remit was to keep itself informed of school curriculum work already being undertaken by other bodies and individuals; to use such information to identify important areas where work was not being undertaken; and to undertake work in that area or stimulate others to do so. It also had a role in the dissemination of information on curriculum development. It was also required to take over the responsibility for all projects being carried out by the Schools Council at the time of its demise.

Following the announcement that a national curriculum would be introduced and that SCDC's main function would be taken over by the newly established National Curriculum Council and the Curriculum Council for Wales, the SCDC was wound up.
