Incorporated by act of 28th March 1771 (11 Geo III, cap.75) by name,"Company of Proprietors of Canal Navigation from Chesterfield to River Trent".

Under Manchester and Lincoln Union Railway and Chesterfield and Gainsborough Canal Act 7th August 1846, Canal Company was united, consolidated and incorporated with Manchester and Lincoln Union Railway and Chesterfield and Gainsborough Canal company which company was incorporated by said Act. This latter Company was incorporated with Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company under act of 9th July 1847. Latter Company's name was changed in 1897 to Great Central Railway Company which became amalgamated with companies forming London and North Eastern Railway Company as from 1st January 1923.
