Administrative / biographical background:

Incorporated under act of 28 March 1793 (33 Geo III, cap.96) as "Company of Proprietors of Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal Navigation".

By virtue of Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Act 5 July 1865, company was sold and transferred to Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company, purchase money to be paid to respective shareholders in proportion to amount paid up on their respective shares therein. Minute of 18 October 1866 recites terms and makes provision for dissolving of company.

Note In August 1973 it was discovered that RAIL 812/9-10 were in fact records of the Brecon Boat Company, an independent undertaking but with the same proprietors as the canal Co. The records of both companies reflect each other's activities. Hadfield states the Boat Company was first heard of in 1796 and that it was dissolved in 1865, probably when the Canal Company was absorbed by the Monmouthshire canal.
