Administrative / biographical background:

The London, Midland and Scottish Railway Company Scientific Research Department commenced operation on 1 January 1933. It consisted of six technical sections (Chemical, Physics, Metallurgical, Engineering, Paints and Textiles) and a library information service. The organisation continued after nationalisation, under the control of the London Midland Region of British Railways, until the formation of the Railway Executive's Research Department in 1951.
