Incorporated by act of 5 & 6 Vic, cap.90 (June 1842) though it had been formed in 1839 by proprietors associated under deed of settlement, and opened in 1841 without parliamentary sanction. Under act of 30th June 1852 (16 Vic, cap.142), Hartlepool West Harbour & Dock Company and Stockton & Hartlepool Railway Company were amalgamated to form West Hartlepool Harbour & Railway Company. New company purchased Clarence Railway Company which became vested in West Hartlepool Harbour & Railway Company, three companies not being actually merged into one until 17th May 1853.

West Hartlepool Harbour & Railway Company was amalgamated with North Eastern Railway Company as from 30th June 1865 under act of 1865 (28 & 29 Vic, cap.368). North Eastern Railway Company, Hull & Barnsley Railway Company, and Hull Joint Dock Committee were dissolved and united into one company by name North Eastern Railway Company as from 1st April 1922 by virtue of North Eastern and Hull & Barnsley railway companies Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 1st April 1922. This North Eastern Railway Company became part of London & North Eastern Railway Company as from 1st January 1923 under the North Eastern, Eastern, and East Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922, dated 30th December 1922.
