Prisoner name: Trafford Blair. Prisoner age: 21. Court and date of trial: Cheshire Lent Assizes, Chester, March 1834. Crime: Burglary at [Altringham, Cheshire]. Initial sentence: Death recorded and commuted to transportation for life. Gaoler's report: 'Character bad'. Annotated: Nil. Petitioner(s): Brice Blair (the convict's father); Brice Blair (convict's father), undersigned by Sarah Blair (convict's mother) and Thomas Blair (convict's brother); 18 inhabitants of Manchester [Lancashire]. Grounds for clemency: Previous good character; he was the dupe of his confederate; when arrested he had no weapons or any property; his parents are far advanced in years. Additional Information: He was tried and convicted with Joseph Makin and held in Chester Castle gaol. The convict formerly had two brothers, John Blair who served in the 2nd Dragoons Royal Horse Artillery and William Blair who served in the 9th Battalion Royal Artillery, both now deceased. The convict is lately from Manchester. |
