Crime: Receiving stolen goods, a quantity of silk handkerchiefs.

Initial sentence: Six months imprisonment in Cold Bath Fields House of Correction without hard labour.

Annotated: Remission prepared 26 March 1833.

Petitioner(s): Abigail Samuel of Goodmansfields Middlesex (prisoner's wife) undersigned by 20 people (names and addresses given); J Hirsekell, Chief Rabbi.

Grounds for clemency: Twenty witnesses at trial spoke of good character; excellent character; judge directed jury to acquit prisoner but they found him guilty; highly respected in Jewish community; purchased handkerchiefs in all innocence; delicate health; needs to be supplied with kosher food in prison as a strict Jew.
