Originally incorporated as Taw Vale Railway & Dock Company under act of 11th June 1838. The company was revived 21st July 1845 under the Taw Vale Amendment Act (8 & 9 Vic, cap.107).

The name of the company was changed from August 1851 to the North Devon Railway & Dock Company Act (14 & 15 Vic, cap.83) of 24th July 1851, and was leased to the London & South Western Railway Company for 1,000 years as from 1st January 1863.

The North Devon Railway & Dock Company was amalgamated with the London & South Western Railway Company as from 1st January 1865 under the London & South Western Railway Act of 1864.

The London & South Western Railway Company became part of the Southern Railway Company as from 1st January 1923 under the Railways (Southern Group) Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 22nd December 1922.
