Muswell Hill Estate Company Limited was established under limited liability but was incorporated under act of 30th July 1866 to construct railways over their estate and was worked by Great Northern Railway Company. Line was opened on 24th May 1873 but subsequently closed during rebuilding of Alexandra Palace and reopened on 1st May 1875, Alexandra Palace being opened on same date. Railway ceased after August 1882.

Muswell Hill & Palace Railway Company was incorporated 25th September 1886 under Act 50 Vic, cap.35 to vest railways of Muswell Hill Estate Company Limited in an ordinary railway company. Line was reopened on 8th April 1898 and worked by Great Northern Railway Company. Undertaking was purchased by Great Northern Railway Company under act of 1911. Great Northern Railway Company became part of London & North Eastern Railway Company from 1st January 1923 under North Eastern, Eastern, and East Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30th December 1922.
