The Joint Committee was incorporated under the Midland & North Eastern Railways Act of 1874 by which the Midland and the North Eastern railway companies were authorised to make the Swinton & Knottingley Railway, which railway was to be managed by such Joint Committee.

The Midland Railway Company became part of the London Midland & Scottish Railway Company as from 1st January 1923 under the North Western, Midland & West Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30th December 1922, and the North Eastern Railway Company was dissolved and a new North Eastern Company incorporated as from 1st April 1922 under the North Eastern and Hull & Barnsley railway companies' Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 1st April 1922. The new North Eastern Railway Company became part of the London & North Eastern Railway Company as from 1st January 1923 under the North Eastern, Eastern and East Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30th December 1922.

The Midland & North Eastern railway companies' Committee was vested in the British Transport Commission as from 1st January 1948 under the Transport Act 1947.
