Administrative / biographical background:

Incorporated under act of 15th May 1860. Company was amalgamated with Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company under act of 5th July 1865. Midland Railway Company acquired joint interest in undertaking under act of 24th June 1869 and management passed to Joint Committee appointed thereunder. Under Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Act of 6th August 1872, this committee, Sheffield and Midland railway companies' Committee, was incorporated as a body corporate and its name changed to Great Central and Midland Joint Committee under act of 22nd July 1904. Great Central and Midland Joint Committee was vested in British Transport Commission under Transport Act of 1947.
