Incorporated by act of 16th July 1846. Line was worked by Midland Railway Company. Under Manchester, Buxton, Matlock and Midlands Junction Railway and Cromford Canal Leasing Act of 17th June 1852, authority was given to lease Railway and Cromford Canal (which was purchased by Railway Company under Cromford Canal Sale Act 1st August 1851) to London and North Western and Midland railway companies for period not exceeding 99 years. Lease was sanctioned, at Shareholders' General Meeting held on 2nd September 1852, for 19 years from 1st July 1852.

Manchester, Buxton, Matlock and Midlands Junction Railway Company was vested in Midland Railway Company as and from 1st July 1871 by virtue of Section 44 of Midland Railway (Additional Powers) Act 1870. Midland Railway Company became vested in London Midland and Scottish Railway Company as from 1st January 1923.
