The Ely, Haddenham and Sutton Railway Company was incorporated under act of 23rd June 1864.

After completion of an extension authorised under act of 7th April 1876, name of Company was changed to Ely and St Ives Railway Company.

Under an agreement scheduled to Act of 1876 and under act of 21st July 1879, Great Eastern Railway Company leased line for 999 years, but undertaking was vested in Great Eastern Railway Company under act of 1898.
