Court and date of trial: Old Bailey 11 September 1832.

Crime: Stealing in a dwelling house, a quantity of lace, silks and other articles valued at £700 and upwards, the property of his mistress Mrs Ann Hogard of Regent Street, Westminster, London.

Petitioner(s): Edward Howe, the convict, undersigned by 26 inhabitants of Westminster, London; parents of the convict; Edward Howe, the convict, undersigned by George Frankland, employer.

Grounds for clemency: He had enhanced his mistress's business by his diligence; it was her fault he committed the crime because she did not oversee his work properly; convict's highly respectable aged father (83) and mother (71) and six siblings are disconsolate; he has made restitution to his mistress who is consequently in a far better situation, not least because her goods were similar to his own; his health has deteriorated in Van Diemen's Land, where his conduct has been very good.
