Under Cleator & Furness Railway Act 28th June 1866, Whitehaven & Furness Junction Railway Company and Whitehaven, Cleator & Egremont Railway Company were authorised to construct a railway as recited therein and to appoint three persons from each company, and their successors in office, to be called Cleator & Furness Railway Committee. Whitehaven & Furness Junction Railway Company was amalgamated with Furness Railway Company under Furness Railway (Whitehaven Amalgamation) Act of 16th July 1866, and Whitehaven, Cleator & Egremont Railway Company was vested in London & North Western Railway Company as from 1st July 1877 under London & North Western Railway (Whitehaven, Cleator & Egremont Railway Vesting) Act 1877, but by London & North Western and Furness railway companies (Whitehaven, Cleator & Egremont Vesting) Act of 17th June 1878, Whitehaven, Cleator & Egremont Railway Company was vested in London & North Western Railway Company and Furness Railway Company jointly to be maintained and managed by Joint Committee as set forth in section 4 of the act.

Furness Railway Company and London & North Western Railway Company were amalgamated into London Midland & Scottish Railway Company under North Western, Midland and West Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30th December 1922.
