Administrative / biographical background:

From its establishment in 1949, the Nature Conservancy set up a number of regional offices and regional research stations to provide support for nature reserves and to undertake research, surveys and experimental work.

Following the creation of the Nature Conservancy Council in 1973, the provision, management and maintenance of regional centres was continued by the Council.

Management of the regional organisation and its offices was the responsibility of one of the two deputy directors of the Nature Conservancy. After 1973, this function was carried out by a deputy director of the Council.
