Adam HELLER-SAKOWICZ: Polish. With a past in the wartime Polish underground and a brief spell in a concentration camp, HELLER arrived in the UK in 1945 as a member of the Polish Consulate in London. He later joined the Embassy staff on the apparent understanding that he should pursue English language studies here. This he did, after a fashion, while retaining his Embassy job. He was recalled to Poland in 1950, but instead settled in the UK with an English wife. He had a minor and unproductive Intelligence role in both Consulate and Embassy |
