The material in this series has been used by J D Cantwell for his books The Public Record Office 1838-1958 (London, 1991) and The Public Record Office 1959-1969 (PRO, 2000).

Administrative / biographical background:

John D Cantwell worked at the Public Record Office from 1952 to 1985, as Executive Officer, Inspecting Officer and Assistant Keeper. Following his retirement he joined the office's editorial staff and subsequent work included two volumes on the history of the Public Record Office, which were published in 1991 and 2000. Cantwell also undertook a number of archival assignments for the British Executive Service Overseas.
