Description: |
Harry McSHANE: British. A shipyard engineer who was a leading member of the 'Red Clyde' movement. McShane was particularly active in the National Unemployed Workers Movement during the 1920s and 1930s, organising a number of the hunger marches and demonstrations associated with them. He joined the Communist Party in 1922 and held numerous offices (including selection as a Parliamentary candidate and acting as a correspondent for the 'Daily Worker') from 1932 until he resigned from the Party in 1952 following criticism for incompetence and a personality clash with another leading Glasgow communist. He attempted to form a new 'Anti-Stalinist' party, in due course being subsumed into the UK Trotskyists, where he remained until his death in 1988 |
