Prisoner's name: George Moore.

Prisoner's age: 21.

Prisoner's occupation: servant; javelin man.

Court and date of trial: Sussex Summer Assizes 6 August 1830.

Crime: Housebreaking - selling six tablecloths on 31 March 1830, property of Miss Jeffreys.

Initial sentence: Death commuted to transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: Well behaved, first offence - former course of life good.

Outcome: nil.

Petitioner: 77 inhabitants of Markfield, Leicestershire; the convict in Launceston, Van Diemens Land, with character reference.

Grounds for clemency: Honest sober and industrious; supports his aged father and mother; led astray by John Reeves whom he met in a pub; did not know cloths were stolen; Peel has intimated to his mother that he would ask Horsham Gaol for his 'character'; in Van Diemens Land now married to a free emigrant with 5 children; has committed no offence while in the colony; gained a ticket of leave, believes he was recommended for an absolute pardon before granting of such pardons was discontinued.

Other papers: 2 letters from inhabitants of Leicester asking whether anything more can be done for Moore and drawing attention to their petition; a letter from B Doswell Governor of Horsham Gaol stating that Moore has behaved in a quiet and orderly manner while there; character references from previous employera, John March and John Morris Holderman; a letter from Herman Merivale forwarding a letter from the Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemen's Land, Sir William Denison, confirming that Moore was not promised an absolute pardon as he asserts but that his conduct in the colony has been good.
