Administrative / biographical background:

The Industrial Injuries Advisory Council is an independent statutory body, first set up under section 61 of the National Insurance (Industrial Injuries) Act 1946. The Council's task is to advise the minister responsible, since 1968 the Secretary of State for Social Services, on all matters relating to the industrial injuries scheme. It consists of a chairperson and about 16 members, all of whom are appointed by the secretary of state. Amongst these are representatives of employer and employee organisations as well as specialists in such fields as occupational health or the field of social policy as it relates to industrial injuries.

The Industrial Diseases Sub-Committee (IDSC) investigates, with the help of co-opted specialists, for inclusion on the schedule of prescribed industrial diseases.
