Description:

Medical and surgical journal of the convict transport Ramillies for 12 April-14 August 1854 by Daniel Ritchhie, Surgeon, during which time the said transport was employed in conveying convicts from England to Gibraltar and Western Australia.

Folios 1-3: Copy of sick list.

Folios 3-7: Samuel Frost, aged 25, prisoner from Portland prison; case number 1; disease or hurt, phthisis. Put on sick list, 12 May 1854. Died 3 July 1854.

Folios 7-8: Bridget Jennings, aged 12, sergeant’s daughter; case number 2; disease or hurt, measles. Put on sick list, 10 May 1854 at sea. Discharged 20 May 1854 cured.

Folios 8-9: James Walsh, aged 35, prisoner; case number 3; disease or hurt, retention of urine. Put on sick list, 17 May 1854 at sea. Discharged ?

Folio 10: Thomas Jackson, aged 31, prisoner; case number 4; disease or hurt, syphilitic cachexia. Put on sick list, 11 June 1854 at sea. Discharged 30 July 1854.

Folios 11-12: James Walsh; case number 5; disease or hurt, retention of urine. Put on sick list, [?]. Discharged 23 May 1854.

Folios 12-14: George Bye, aged 38, prisoner; case number 5; disease or hurt, fever. Put on sick list, 22 May 1854 at sea. Discharged 3 June 1854.

Folios 14-18: Patrick Farrell, aged 24, prisoner; case number 6; disease or hurt, opthalmia (granular conjunctiva). Put on sick list, 29 May 1854 at Gibraltar. Discharged 11 August 1854 to hospital.

Folios 18-21: James Spranklin, aged 43, pensioner; case number 7; disease or hurt, amaurosis. Put on sick list, 17 June 1854. Discharged 14 August 1854 to hospital.

Folios 21-24: Samuel Alexander, aged 30, prisoner; case number 8; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 16 July 1854. Discharged 10 August 1854 to hospital at Fremantle.

Folio 31: A return showing the number of convicts, guard, guard’s families and free settlers embarked on board the convict transport Ramillies, for a passage to Gibraltar and Western Australia; the number put on the sick list and who died during the voyage; the number sent to the Colonial Hospital and the number landed in health.
