CROWTHER, James Gerald. British. CROWTHER first came to notice in 1929 as the scientific correspondent of the 'Sunday Worker'. He later carried out a similar function for the Manchester Guardian and by 1943 was editor of 'Soviet Science' and head of the Science Department of the British Council. In 1947 he was appointed secretary-general of the communist-dominated World Federation of Scientific Workers and in 1948 established the British Cultural Committee for Peace, later known as the British Peace Committee. He resigned as secretary-general of the WFSW in 1954 but remained on its executive committee until 1959 |
