Description:

Medical and surgical journal of HMS Ringdove for 1 January to 31 December 1875 by A. Gorham, M.D, Staff Surgeon, during which time the said ship was employed on the China Station. [Note: ADM 101/192, 1A-1B are produced as a single document: order as ADM 101/192].

Folio 1: Instructions for the compilation of the medical journal.

Folio 2: George Roberts, aged 37, sailmaker’s mate; case number 1; disease or hurt, chronic rheumatism. Put on sick list, 9 April 1875 at Hong Kong. Invalided 10 April 1875 at a medical survey and discharged to HMS Victor Emanuel to await the arrival of the mail steamer for passage to England.

Folio 3: Thomas Cotter, aged 28, stoker; case number 2; disease or hurt, syphilis and debility. Put on sick list, 25 March 1875 at Hong Kong. Invalided 29 March 1875 by medical survey at the Royal Naval hospital in Hong Kong and discharged to HMS Victor Emanuel to await the arrival of the mail steamer for passage to England.

Folio 3: Thomas Morris, aged 26, Assistant Engineer; case number 3; disease or hurt, stricture of the bladder. Put on sick list, 3 May 1875 at Hong Kong. Discharged 3 May 1875 to the Royal Naval hospital in Hong Kong.

Folio 4: Fred Yelland, aged 27, Armourer; case number 4; disease or hurt, gonorrhoea. Put on sick list, 3 April 1875 at Hong Kong. Discharged 19 April 1875 to the Royal Naval hospital in Hong Kong.

Folios 4-5: George Taylor, aged 19, ordinary seaman; case numbers 5, 9; disease or hurt, hypertrophy of right mammilla. Put on sick list, 12 May 1875 at Hong Kong. Discharged 14 May 1875 to the Royal Naval hospital in Hong Kong and invalided from there on 20 July 1875.

Folio 4: Robert Robjent, aged 20, stoker; case number 6; disease or hurt, bronchitis. Put on sick list, 18 May 1875 at Hong Kong. Discharged 21 May 1875 to the Royal Naval hospital in Hong Kong.

Folio 4: Edward Elliott, aged 29, leading stoker; case number 7; disease or hurt, gonorrhoea. Put on sick list, 28 May 1875. Discharged 7 June 1875 to hospital.

Folio 4: G. Gawan, aged 20, ordinary seaman; case number 8; disease or hurt, scrofula. Put on sick list, 22 July 1875 at Hong Kong. Discharged 28 July 1875 to hospital.

Folios 5-6: William Shulver, aged 30, stoker; case numbers 10-12; disease or hurt, syphilis. Put on sick list, 14 June 1875. Discharged 16 June 1875 to hospital.

Folio 6: John Cardew, aged 26, captain of the forecastle; case number 13; disease or hurt, diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 3 June 1875 at Hong Kong. Discharged 7 June 1875 to hospital at Hong Kong, and invalided from there with chronic diarrhoea.

Folio 6: John Cornelius, aged 29, able seaman; case number 14; disease or hurt, gonorrhoea. Put on sick list, 13 July 1875 at Hong Kong. Discharged 28 July 1875 to hospital.

Folio 7: Thomas Warren, aged 17, boy; case number 15; disease or hurt, rheumatism and orchitis. Put on sick list, 20 June 1875. Discharged 5 July 1875 to hospital.

Folio 7: Charles Rich, aged 36, leading stoker; case number 16; disease or hurt, rheumatism. Put on sick list, 7 March 1875. Discharged 16 March 1875 to hospital.

Folio 8: Thomas Downes, aged 22, able seaman; case number 20; disease or hurt, gonorrhoea. Put on sick list, 16 October 1875 at Hong Kong. Discharged 22 October 1875 to hospital. Returned to duty 9 December 1875.
