Title: Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance Systems: 1978-2002 dataset
Description: This dataset contains records for the Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance Systems (HASS and LASS) from 1978 (two years after the system was set up) up to 2002 (the year before collection of home accident data ceased). The dataset as transferred was described by the DTI as"a full, final copy of the data held in the HASS and LASS systems". At time of transfer the HASS dataset contained around 5 million accident victim records, with data contained in over 30 fields of information. Each record on the database gives details about an individual person and a single accident. The record describes: Details of the accident victim, including demographic information, such as age, sex etc; Details of the accident itself: brief description, and type; Circumstances surrounding the occurrence of the accident; The time of the accident; Patient's activity at time of accident;
Where accident happened; Resulting injury or injuries caused by the accident; Part of the body injured; The involvement of consumer products/articles in the accident; Features of the home involved; Whether patient's own home; Whether patient arrived by ambulance; Whether patient was admitted to hospital as an inpatient and for how long. In 1992, the systems became fully computerised, resulting in two linked databases. The new HASS and LASS combined systems were radically different from the system that had been in place since 1976, by using a relational database that was capable of combining data from systems that were previously kept separate. Each year, from 1978 to 2002, has six corresponding datafiles associated with it. They are (1) Accident, (2) Article, (3) Victim, (4) Property, (5) Bodypart and (6) Injury. This has resulted in 150 separate tables.
