Title: | Archive Inspection Services Unit: Archival Mapping of Places of Deposit in England and Wales: Projects: Wales |
Description: | This dataset contains information gathered during the Archival Mapping Project for Wales which took place from 1998 to 1999. Like the English archival mapping projects, the archival mapping project for Wales focused on record offices run by local authorities (of which there are 14 in Wales). Additionally, like the Scottish mapping project, the Welsh project focused on specialist record offices: those run by universities, museums, libraries, and national bodies (the survey covered 8 such record offices). In parallel with other mapping projects, the Welsh project employed exactly the same method and used a 20-page questionnaire to assess facilities and services under seven headings or themes, which were: Accommodation; Public access; Conservation; Finding aids; Information technology; Electronic records; Staff training. Results from the survey were analysed and recorded on an Excel spreadsheet. Assessing provisions in these seven areas provided data which could be compared with that from other mapping projects. Individual participating record offices could also use their own results to indicate performance and need, either for internal planning or for bids for external funding. It was hoped that this would contribute to the process of ensuring that inadequacies in Welsh record offices were brought up to standard, and archival excellence developed further, in a structured and reasoned manner. The data structure of the tables in this dataset matches the structure of the archival mapping questionnaires issued for this mapping project. The dataset consists of 15 tables. |
