Title: Archive Inspection Services Unit: Archival Mapping of Places of Deposit in England and Wales: Projects: England (Phase 1)
Description: This dataset contains information gathered during the English Archival Mapping Project (Phase 1) which took place from 1997 to 1998. A questionnaire on the main archival building was issued to local authority Chief Archivists throughout the English regions to complete and return to the Public Record Office. The data was then analysed and recorded on the project spreadsheet. The project requested information about the following topics: Accommodation and storage (site, location, site risks, soundness of structure of main building, fire protection, flood and water damage and risk maintenance); Security of storage facilities - strong room and repository areas (physical and environmental security, special media); Accrual space available (including out stores); Staff accommodation; Public access and services (e.g. public search room facilities, layout, preservation equipment on hand and security); other public facilities (e.g. lecture rooms); Service delivery in the main building (record delivery times, enquiries service etc.); Reference services (provision of publications, literature and secondary sources); Standards, surveys and outreach (customer service / care and outreach); Preservation and conservation (e.g. disaster control, use of surrogates, in-house conservation resources); Records in need of repair assessment; Finding aids (extent of listing backlogs and records already listed, prioritisation); Information technology strategy (management and use of IT in the archive); Cataloguing and indexing using IT software; Use of internet to facilitate remote access; Electronic records (use, plans to introduce, staff training in use, migration / preservation, public access to and storage facilities); Staff education and training; and Archivist's conclusions.The data structure of the tables in this dataset matches the structure of the archival mapping questionnaires issued for this mapping project. The dataset consists of 15 tables.
