Title: Bovine TB Herd dataset
Description: This dataset comprises 24 annual tables containing data on the incidence of TB in herds of cattle in Devon and Cornwall between 1977 and 2002, but excluding 1980 and 1982, which were not transferred.

In each table, a record normally indicates a case of TB infection in a herd. TB infection was the trigger for creating a new record entry; and each record can hold data on the infected herd, from up to five tests with reactors. A reactor animal is one that has failed the tuberculin skin test. If reactors are found in a herd, this is known as a herd TB 'breakdown'.

As testing in an infected herd was carried out at 60 day intervals, one record entry was usually sufficient to hold data on a herd for one year. Because operational exceptions occurred, there are occasional cases in the dataset where a single herd can have data spanning two records in order to accommodate the additional groups of reactors. One field in the table (F12) specifies whether the record is a new case or continuing infection.

A herd is normally identified using the fields F1-F3: County, Parish, Holding. The field Holding Number (F4) gives the number of herds within a holding. DEFRA define a holding as 'land on which farming activities are carried out and which is ... farmed in one unit having regard to supplies of machinery, livestock, feedstuffs and manpower ... it is possible to have more than one holding within a whole farming business'. The Holding Number field appears to be based on location.

In addition to details of reactor testing, the TB Herd tables contain information about the farm (and its owner) to which the herd belongs, including geographical location data.
