Title: Survey of Abortion Patients: Main Patient Survey
Description: This dataset contains details of women's experiences in the process of abortion, including consultations, delays, and quality of treatment. The information in the dataset was compiled from the respondents' answers to the Abortion Survey questionnaire.

The survey questions cover the type of hospital (NHS or private), the number of weeks' gestation at which the operation took place (patient and hospital estimates), and the reason for any discrepancy, where appropriate. Also details of each respondent's GP (religion, sex, type of practice), and the number of consultations prior to the abortion, both with doctors and with other professionals.

The survey questionnaire asked whether the possibility of abortion was discussed with friends and/or relatives. It asked if the respondents were satisfied with discussions of the advantages/disadvantages and reasons for abortion. Reference was also made to the number of previous abortions (whether NHS or private), methods of contraception used, and future intended contraceptive practice. The respondents were asked whether there was any discussion of birth control with doctors or other professional staff, and whether sterilization was discussed. They were also questioned about their satisfaction with the decision-making process for abortion and/or sterilization. Other questions covered the costs involved (operational, consultations, fares, lost pay), the length of journey from home to clinic/hospital, the number of weeks between consultation and operation, satisfaction with treatment from medical staff and details of the operation (understanding and expectation of respondent). Some background information about each respondent was also collected, although the survey did not identify individuals. These questions covered the respondent's age, her age on finishing full-time education, place of birth, religion, marital status, number of children (ages), social class, household composition, persons per room, amenities (whether shared), employment status at time of conception, and attitude to returning to work. The respondent's answers could take the form of yes/no answers, answers from a wider choice of options, or a number within a defined range (e.g. the number of weeks gestation when the operation took place). In some cases interviewers had to record the response in the interviewee's own words.

The data is contained in one table.
