Title: Nursery Schools: 1980 dataset
Description: 1980
This dataset consists of data gathered from nursery schools in England during the Schools' Census conducted by the Department of Education and Science in 1980. As in other Schools' Censuses, the enumeration date was the third Thursday in January (17 January 1980). The data reflects the position in nursery schools on that date. Nursery schools were defined by the Department of Education and Science as schools which" provide[d] education primarily for children below compulsory school age, i.e. under 5". The dataset contains data on 595 schools. It appears that these fell into the following categories: Nursery schools maintained by local education authorities (LEAs), whose expenditure was met by LEAs from local rates and central government grants. Statistics published by the Department of Education and Science indicate that there were 596 LEA maintained nursery schools in England at the time of the 1980 Schools' Census. Direct grant nursery schools, whose governing bodies were assisted by central government grants, and a proportion of pupils attending them did so free or under an arrangement whereby LEAs met their tuition fees. Department of Education statistics record that there were three direct grant nursery schools in England in 1980. The dataset consists of a single table (scennu80) which contains one record per school.
