Wilhelm KOENEN: German. Wilhelm KOENEN was a leading figure in the German Trade Union Movement and Communist Party (KPD) in the early 1920s and 1930s. Following his alleged involvement in the Reichstag fire of 1933, he fled Germany. After short stays in Spain, the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia, he arrived in UK in 1938, becoming leader of the KPD there and influential in efforts to mobilize anti-Nazi activity in Germany. During the war he was interned briefly on the Isle of Man and in Canada. KOENEN returned to Germany in 1944, becoming a senior Party member and State official. KOENEN was reported to be an important Comintern agent
